As real estate prices continue their never-ending climb along Dartmouth and Halifax’s waterfront, you might think there’s no way you’ll ever be able to afford a home with a water view. But we have great news: there are still lots of spots in HRM where you can buy that million-dollar view for less than $500,000. In some places, a lot less.
So let’s start with Halifax Harbour If you’re sold on that sparkling view of Halifax across the water, King’s Wharf is where you want to be. Each unit has its own view of the Harbour, from Georges Island straight across to the MacDonald Bridge. If you’d prefer a freehold on the Dartmouth side, we recommend looking to properties in Eastern Passage. In addition to its excellent schools, golf course, and Harbour front boardwalk, Eastern Passage contains a number of beautiful lakes where water frontage is very affordable. And it’s still less than 30 minutes to the bridge during rush hour.
Continuing out along the Eastern Shore, you can find a huge number of undeveloped tracts of land for incredible prices. Picture the ever-changing Atlantic, swaying birch trees, and the ragged rocks where the land meets the ocean... the views are stunning. You can also find charming homes, if you’d like to watch the sunset from your deck right now, instead of waiting for a custom build. Properties in this area are so much less expensive than along the South Shore, and they’re closer to the city. That won’t last forever, of course, so if you’ve always dreamed of owning your own island for less than $500,000 — or even less than $400,000! — you should stake your claim now. You’ll thank yourself very soon.
Moving inland from Musquodoboit Harbour, 1000 glacial lakes offer even more waterfront opportunities. This is the very definition of cottage country, exactly what you picture when you think of Canadian summer vacations. Whether you’re in the market for an existing cottage-and-boathouse to fix up or unspoilt lakefront acreage, you’ll have no trouble finding it. How amazing will it be to host your friends and family on canoeing adventures and watch the kids cannonballing off your own dock?
And finally, shooting back down to Halifax Harbour where we began, have you considered the properties along the Bedford Basin? Just minutes away from the peninsula, you can often find a few properties on the market in the Birch Cove area that need a little love, but are priced hundreds of thousands below a waterfront condo just two miles away. These homes often feel a little like treehouses, secluded from the rush of the Bedford Highway, with a front row seat to Bedford Basin Yacht Club’s Wednesday night club races. If you’ve been dreaming of the perfect property with gorgeous water views, there’s no need to wait. Our amazing agents are plugged in to all the overlooked cottages, secret lakes, and amazing values hiding in plain sight at virtually every price point.
